Math Vocabulary Matching Worksheet for Word Problems: Teaching the Words Before the Numbers

Most word-problem mistakes are reading mistakes. Here's how a ten-minute matching worksheet on phrases like "how many more" and "in all" fixes the part students are actually stuck on.

Ask a fourth grader what "how many more" means in a word problem and you will learn a lot about why they got it wrong. Most of the mistakes teachers see on word problems aren't computation errors at all. The student can subtract; they just didn't know that "how many more" was asking them to. A math vocabulary matching worksheet for word problems targets exactly that gap. It separates the reading from the arithmetic for a few minutes, so students can practice the part they're actually stuck on: turning everyday English into a mathematical operation.

Math has its own vocabulary, and it's stranger than we tend to admit. "Sum" and "some" sound identical. "Product" means something you buy in every other context. "Difference" in a problem does not mean the two numbers are different. "Altogether," "in all," "combined," and "total" all mean add, but they never look alike on the page, and a student who has only ever been taught "plus means add" is genuinely lost when the word "plus" never appears. Because all the options are visible at once, students have to discriminate between them, and the discrimination is where the learning happens. Second, bring the same list back with the columns reshuffled a week later, and then again before the unit test.
