Differentiating Puzzles for Mixed-Ability Classes (Without Anyone Noticing)

Every class is a mixed-ability class, and by the middle of a unit the spread is usually wider than it was on day one. Differentiating puzzles for mixed-ability classes is one of the quieter ways to manage that spread, because a puzzle can be adjusted in a dozen small ways without changing what it looks like from across the room. That last part matters as much as the pedagogy. A student who can tell at a glance that they got the "easy sheet" has already learned something you never meant to teach. The principle underneath almost every adjustment is this: differentiation in a puzzle rarely means different content. Shrinking the grid and running words only left-to-right and top-to-bottom gives a struggling reader a genuinely achievable task; adding diagonals and backwards words turns the same word list into a real challenge for a student who'd otherwise finish in ninety seconds. The logistics deserve as much thought as the puzzles. Mark versions with something small and neutral — a dot in the corner, a letter in the footer — rather than "Level 1" across the top, and hand them out as you circulate instead of calling names. Re-sort every couple of weeks based on what last week's work actually showed you, and tell students plainly that the sheets vary and everyone gets different ones at different times.
